Max Verstappen became the youngest winner in Formula One history when he triumphed on his Red Bull in Sunday\u2019s Spanish Grand Prix.<\/p>\n

Verstappen had been branded a future world champion almost as soon as he entered the sport and no one doubts that now.<\/p>\n

When Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg crashed out of the race on the opening lap it seemed that certain that it would remain the talking point for the rest of the day. But in the absence of the Mercedes we had a proper car race.<\/p>\n

Verstappen, 18 years and 227 days old, also became the first Dutch winner as he pushed the Ferrari pair of Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastien Vettel into second and third place; Daniel Ricciardo suffered a puncture on the penultimate lap but still hobbled over the line in fourth.<\/p>\n

Vettel, who was the previous youngest driver after winning the Italian Grand Prix in 2008, said: \u201cThis is Max\u2019s day. As a sportsman we must respect that.”<\/p>\n

Verstappen only became a Red Bull driver this month. He was promoted to the team from Toro Rosso, replacing Daniel Kvyat, who had had an unhappy start to the season.<\/p>\n

He said afterwards: \u201cIt feels amazing. I can\u2019t believe it. It was a great race. I have to say thank you to the team for giving me such a great car.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo win in the first race is such an amazing feeling. My dad helped me a lot to achieve this, this is amazing. I couldn\u2019t believe I was leading the race. I held onto the tyres. We had the right strategy. It\u2019s a very big surprise. I had quite a bit of pressure from Kimi but it is difficult to overtake here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Verstappen led for the final 32 of the 66 laps. His two-stop strategy proved a winner but he finished just 0.6 seconds ahead of Raikkonen, who put him under sustained pressure. Raikkonen, who has now overtaken Hamilton in the championship, added: \u201cThe really scary thing is that I used to race against his father [Jos].\u201d<\/p>\n
